Books vs. movies is an age-old debate–which is better? To try and answer this question, I decided to focus on one book and its movie adaptation. The book, Captain Underpants, is an American staple in my opinion. While I believe that the books were 10x better than the movie, the movie was still very enjoyable, especially for younger audiences or people who don’t like to read.
To get a variety of opinions, I decided to ask around the school. Freshman Kendelle Mcculley remembered the books fondly from elementary school as being “unique compared to other super books.” As far as the movie goes, she thought “the animation was good and the voice acting was awesome.” She liked how she could see the books come to life and that factor made her prefer the movie.
Sophomore Gabriel Ashcraft said “I loved [the Captain Underpants books] as a kid. They were some of my favorites and helped me get into my love for reading.” When asked what he thought of the movie, he stated that, “I really enjoyed it, and it’s still a fun watch.” Even though the movie changed several plot points from the books, such as how Professor Poopypants had Melvin help him in the movie vs. doing it alone in the book, Gabe still liked both adaptations. He said, “I think they did a good job combining multiple plots and elements from multiple books into one movie.” Even though he liked the movie, he prefers the books, just because there are so many of them. He said he would strongly support a second movie, mostly because they teased one at the end of the first one but never made it.
What I have concluded from this is that the books and movie have their own strengths and weaknesses, leading to many people liking them both.
