Harrison High School excels at many things. The whole community comes out to watch our football team or send our wrestlers off to state, and while the visual arts may be (ironically) less visible than other activities, Harrison student artists are doing amazing things throughout our community.
Art is just a word to some, but it is a way of life to others. Art is all around us. It’s in everything that we do, especially here at Harrison High School. While some may be noticing the amazing things that our sports department is doing, I’m here to tell you that some Harrison students are leaving their marks in more ways than one.
Many students have a piece of art exhibited in the 2024 Congressional Art Competition “An Artistic Discovery” under Congressman Warren Davidson. The Reception was on April 13th from 10am to 12pm at Champion Mills Conference Center at Spooky Nook Sports. At this event we congratulated the following students: Bella Schroff, Kelsey Clark, Jack Ward, Kendra Enderle, Leah Tenhundfeld, Jack Geers, Sophia Caruso, Olivia Egner, Leah Kathman, Lacie Fels, Ashlee Roell, Bryce Marsh, Allison Goshorn, Lauren Phillips, AJ Willis, and Aubrieana Boehl for their exemplary art work.
During the month of March, there were several artworks featured as well. When asked the importance of art, senior Anthony Pangallo shared that, “Art is important because it allows all people to express themselves and their life story.” Anthony was featured in March for his artwork. He also reveals that, “Art has given me a medium to create a physical representation of my thoughts both realistic and surreal.”
By taking classes such as Photography, Ceramics, and Drawing and Painting, students are able to put forth skills that they are not able to show in standard classes. Students are able to not only broaden their horizons, but also advance their own predetermined skills.
As someone who was featured in the art show for my photography prior in the year, I can tell you, it’s an amazing experience. The fact that you are able to show your artistic abilities to others and be recognized is amazing. Before being featured, I viewed my photography as generally average, but after that, I’m more passionate and confident in myself. This experience has shown me my love for photography, and I could see a potential hobby forming from a silly little class in high school.
Art has become more than a class to these students, it has become a passion, a passion worth recognizing. It’s crazy how three little letters could mean so much…
