Football jerseys aren’t the only thing going green this season. Harrison Student Council has been hard at work trying to improve our school. When searching for problems in our school they noticed one major issue: there is no recycling in the cafeteria.
Recycling bins aren’t hard to find in the classroom, however outside of them bins are hard to find. Despite over half of our school provided lunch items being recyclable, there are no recycling bins to put these items. There is so much waste going in our cafeteria trash cans that is wholly unnecessary.
To solve this issue, Harrison Student Council took it upon themselves to find large recycling bins for our cafeteria. They also are printed signs to give examples of what to recycle which are placed on the bins and hung in the cafeteria. One of the biggest fears with recycling in the cafeteria is that some students would dump the entirety of their lunch contents in the recycling bin instead of the trash. So, to discourage this, the Student Council cut holes in the lid of each of the bins. This makes it near impossible to dump the entirety of a tray in the bin. The recycling bins are currently located to the right of the Wildcat Cafe.
So now that the resources are available, we must put in the effort to recycle! Spread the word, our core values perfectly represent the importance of recycling in our school.
Trust: we trust in you guys to use the bins responsibly. Respect: respect our environment and the future of our planet. Ownership: own up to your waste and work to lessen your carbon footprint. Leadership: show your friends and peers and encourage them to start recycling.
Demonstrate our core values and choose to save our environment, one milk carton at a time! Recycle Recycle Recycle!
