Let‘s face it: we haven’t had a good Spider-Man TV show since Spectacular Spider-Man. However, the new show Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is giving many fans hope of reliving their childhood memories by watching an animated Spider-Man series like those when we were younger.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is an animated show that started airing on Disney+ on January 29th. The first season of the show finished on February 19th with a total of 10 episodes, and the promise of another season. The show captures the beginnings of the Spider-Man that many of us have grown to love. However, this show is not a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It actually takes place in its own alternate reality where Peter Parker goes under Norman Osborn’s wing, and is mentored by him.
The story focuses on Parker’s life when he first became Spider-Man and was facing the hardships of being a superhero while trying to balance school life, including going through several costumes trying to find the right one. This show also does a really good job of introducing secondary characters that match the energy and flow of the show’s story. An example of a character’s energy matching the flow of the story is when Norman Osborn is introduced to Peter. His interaction with Peter shows that Peter’s hero life is about to take a turn for both better and worse, and that this turn will also affect his actual life as well.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man has a unique style; compared to most animated superhero shows, the show’s animation seems like it was ripped straight from the comic books, giving it that nostalgic look. Not to mention they cut down the frame rates, so the animation seems choppier and more animated in the best way. As someone who’s been a spider-man fan for as long as I can remember, I think I speak for all fans of the franchise when I say this show was everything we’ve been wanting. The show has very good chances to be known as one of the best Spider-Man TV shows ever.
Many fans of Spider-Man thought this show wasn’t going to be as good when the first trailer for it dropped, however, ever since the first season aired people were hooked and hoping for another season to come out. The show did so well in fact, that it got a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 9/10 on CBR. These reviews give many Spider-Man fans that this could save the Spider-Man franchise, especially after the Madame Web movie which did not receive that good of feedback from critics and viewers.
