Students enjoyed being outside for the Special Olympics flag football day.
Harrison High School put on a flag football event for Special Olympics on September 29th. Special education students from Harrison, Oak Hills, Indian Hill, and Princeton High Schools, along with their football playing buddies, had a great day of fun in the sun. I got to go to this event and interview the people participating.
Special Olympics first began as a summer camp for people with special needs. it was founded in 1969 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the sister of President John F. Kennedy. Intervention Specialist Cassie Montgomery started Special Olympics at Harrison High School in 2006. It is still going on today. Montgomery loves being a part of seeing students of all schools come together. This was the first Special Olympics event of the year.
I also interviewed students that were playing, asking people what their favorite part of the day was. Most responses were that students enjoyed throwing the ball, playing with your friends, and not getting tackled. Football player, senior Brycen Deller said that the best part about the day was getting to play a sport he loves with friends. Ms. Montgomery likes it that all types of students get to come together and have fun. Mrs. Holbert talked about other Special Olympic events that they put on. Her favorite is snow skiing. Mrs. Holbert loves that students start off scared, but gain confidence and work really hard to get off the bunny slopes and move on to bigger hills that include riding that chair lift.
There are so many ways to volunteer, so if this sounds like fun to you, talk to Mrs. Holbert in room 122 to sign up for Buddy Club.
