When you think of a cheerleader what do you see? Do you see the uniform? The pom poms? The people performing at the pep assembly? Yes, all those things are associated with cheerleaders but that’s not all. The students who dedicate their time to this sport are athletes. There is so much more to a cheer program than just smiles and pom poms. Let’s take a look into our cheerleading program.
The cheerleaders have been given a new practice space this year. It is located in the Art hallway. This way athletes have more time to practice rather than it being spent on setting up and putting away equipment. The room is currently being prepared to be painted. “We have an awesome cheer village that is willing to help us out with any preparations we are making to the room!” head coach Stephanie Ramsey says. This is great progress for the high school team.
The competition team placed 5th in the state last season and they are hoping to move up one placement at state this season. Ramsey said, “We never go into competitions thinking what place will we get, we look at what growth have we made!” Ramsey went on to say, “Our future is bright! We grow as a program every year. Our program starts at the Junior High level and the amount of growth we see from the athletes from Junior high to high school is amazing! Our coaching staff is unbeatable.”
Cheerleading is so much more than it used to be. The sport is evolving into something greater day by day. The students who participate in cheerleading are athletes just like any other student playing a sport. Cheerleading has grown to be a phenomenon in recent years.
If you are interested in becoming a cheerleader, tryouts will be at the end of April/ beginning of May.
