Hot off the heels of varsity volleyball player Faith Young’s race to 1000 kills, the girls’ volleyball team has continued to dominate, winning 12 out of 14 matches and facing a busy schedule for the remainder of the season.
With seven matches left in the season, the girls’ volleyball team has achieved some impressive feats. Namely, varsity player Faith Young reached 1000 kills in a game against Fairfield on Aug. 22nd, a rare feat in high school volleyball. A kill is an offensive play that is unreturnable for an opponent. While this is a noteworthy accomplishment for Young, it is important for the overall team as well. Varsity coach Philip Deak explained that “as much as it’s an individual stat, you are depending on other people to help you get it.” The team this year is strong. “It’s a fun group of kids, they work hard, and they work as a team,” Deak said. The importance of teamwork was echoed by Varsity player Lauren Leurck, who stated, “It’s a fun group of girls, and that’s what makes it fun for me.”
In addition to sports skills, part of what makes this team so strong is the rapport players have with each other, as can be seen by the group teasing Mr. Amberger for his “skinny pants” and the “weird way he runs,” which Coach Deak described as a ongoing inside joke for the team.
The team has an eventful rest of the season, playing Sycamore on Oct. 3rd and Talawanda on Oct. 5th (full schedule available at https://www.southwestschools.org/william-henry-harrison-high-school/volleyball-27/high-school-season-schedule-126/).
Ultimately, the wildcats are excited to cheer on this amazing team for the remainder of their season!
