There are tons of students at Harrison High who work outside of school. Some students work during the week and the weekend during the school year, while others only work during the weekend. Many places in Harrison are hiring such as Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, United Dairy Farmers, CVS, Dunkin Donuts, Pizza Hut, White Castle, Skyline Chili, Waffle House, Dairy Queen, KFC, and more.
Sophia Stinson is a student at WHHHS who works at both the YMCA and New London Hills Club throughout the school week and weekends. “On days I have work and school, I’d say I get around 4 hours for myself,” Sophia states. “I do enjoy working because the people I work with are very fun to be around and make me laugh, even if I’m having a horrible day,” explained Sophia. This shows that although every day routine may not be glamorous, it’s important to look at the positive aspects of it, and be grateful for the good.
Sydney Womack is a student who only works during the weekend at Stateline Restaurant. “I got a job to feel like I have independence and to manage my own money in a checking account,” Sydney stated. Sydney was asked if feels like she has enough free time between going to school throughout the week followed by going to work on the weekend, and she said “Yes, I work from 8 A.M. to 3 P.M. It basically feels like just another school day. It still leaves me with enough time to do my own things.”
If you’re a student that works outside of school and you’re having trouble balancing education and work life, don’t worry! You’re not alone. It is a hard transition to go from having enough time to feeling pressed for time. Students who don’t work go to school 5 days a week and come home and have more than enough time to complete homework, study for upcoming tests, and other personal things that take up your time. Getting a job means you have to go to school 5 days a week followed by work after, leaving you with little time to get simple everyday tasks done.
If you struggle with getting school work done on time due to lack of extra time in the day, consider these tips. Work efficiently and get your schoolwork done as soon as possible after it is assigned. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later. Don’t waste your time doing unnecessary things if you find yourself feeling overwhelmed because you have no time. It is easy to get distracted by something without realizing it. Make a list of the most important things to do, and work through that list. Remember, life can be stressful. Seek support from those around you. Communicate with your teachers if you feel as if you need a little extra help in your classes.
