On October 12, 2023, William Henry Harrison High School’s boys’ soccer team took it to the field against Edgewood, and it was a night to remember. As Senior Night was celebrated, the atmosphere was electric, highlighting the incredible bond among our senior class and the unwavering support from our student body. As Assistant Principal/Athletic director Mr. Mark Meibers says, “The student body at Harrison is amazing and supports all teams. GANG GREEN is real and the best in Southwest Ohio!”
The match against Edgewood was nothing short of spectacular. Just eight minutes in, Randy Freel set the tone with a fantastic assist to Landon Wagner, who found the back of the net in a one-on-one opportunity. Their momentum continued as Gaven Johnson took a quick free kick from 30 yards out, the score bringing the crowd to their feet.
Within the first 18 minutes, Payton Arrasmith showcased his skills by sending an effortless pass over the top to Gaven Johnson. Gaven dribbled past defenders and scored, pushing their lead further. Jefferson Paguada then took charge, winning a penalty kick and converting it with ease, bringing the score to 3-0.
As the second half began, Gaven Johnson had the opportunity to assist Payton Arrasmith again, who capitalized on the chance to score. With just 10 minutes left in the game, Landen Anderson played a perfect pass to Gaven. Gaven then maneuvered around the keeper and set up Evan Esterkamp for another goal, sealing a 5-0 victory.
The final whistle blew, and the excitement erupted as the student body rushed onto the field to celebrate the victory. It was a moment filled with pride and the joy of being part of something special. The Wildcats won 6-0.
Every high school season is a fresh start, and while they had a remarkable 16-0 regular season last year, they approached this season with a clean slate—0-0 and ready to make their mark. They’ve worked hard to build on past successes while addressing some of the flaws from last season. Gaven Johnson claims, “Last season was definitely an exciting season but there was also stress that came along with the maintaining win streak. I think I have found this season to be just as fun because it is my senior year, and our senior group is really close.”
This season is shaping up to be just as exhilarating as last year, and they are far from done. The team of talented athletes are determined to continue their winning ways, fueled by the amazing support of Harrison’s student body. Here’s to the rest of the season—let’s keep this momentum going!
