One of Harrison High School’s goals is to have all students involved in activities outside of school like clubs and sports. They offer a lot of sports, but there is a sport missing: Harrison Youth Lacrosse, or HYL, is looking to add both boys and girls Lacrosse teams.
Lacrosse is a team sport that is played with a lacrosse stick and a lacrosse ball. On their frequently asked questions page, the HYL website says, “Imagine hockey, basketball, and soccer blended into one sport”. HYL started out as a group of parents who wanted a local lacrosse organization for the youth in Harrison. It was created by USA Lacrosse, a sports organization, and they had their first season in the spring of 2023. “Harrison Youth Lacrosse is committed to offer the youth of Harrison an opportunity to experience the excitement of ‘the fastest game on two-feet’,” HYL says on their website. “Our mission is to build a strong community program by focusing on fundamentals, competition, and fun.”
The season for HYL runs from late-February to late-May. There will be around ten games and one all day tournament. No prior experience is needed to join and the sport is easy to learn. Costs are still being decided, but it will cost about $100 for K-6 boys and girls plus equipment and jersey. This fee includes a USA Lacrosse membership, which is required for all team lacrosse activities and covers insurance. Practice days can vary. One of HYL’s main goals is to get a club or a sanctioned OHSAA JV and Varsity High School Team in three to five years. “I’m very grateful to be a part of a program that’s providing opportunities for our community,” says McKenzie Mobley, the high school girls coach for HYL. “The future is bright and I can’t wait to see everything this program will accomplish”.
