The current sophomore class recently went on a trip to Diamond Oaks. Now, if you have been living under a rock your entire time here at William Henry Harrison High School, Diamond Oaks is one of many other Great Oak Career Campuses that Harrison and many other schools offer to help students get a kick start in their career for the future. Diamond Oaks has many career programs for many students such as HVAC, culinary, cosmetology, welding, digital arts, and many more, leaving students many options for future careers.
Students had a great time on the trip to Diamond Oaks! Here is what some of them had to say. Jude Hubbard was hesitant on applying to the Oaks at first because of “the stereotype that it’s where people are going if they aren’t going to go to college.” Now this is a common stereotype that many people believe due to the most popular classes there being blue collar or jobs you don’t need a degree in. However, Hubbard states, “After the trip I am now highly considering applying now that I know I can still go to college and the program can help me move forward in the career I’m looking to pursue.” It’s wonderful to see that students are still able to go to the Oaks, get a better understanding of their career, and further pursue their interests in college.
Gwyn Hill echoed this statement, saying, “I think the Oaks tends to get a negative reputation around Harrison, and it gets stigmatized because people think that it’s a school for people who aren’t going to college.” Hill was also very surprised that Diamond Oaks offers AP classes like in any other high school. Hill also said, “It was a fun place that encourages any path forward whether you do go to college, or don’t.”
The Oakes trip helps to give students an understanding on how the Oaks will be for them, while also showing teachers the perspective of how students feel about the Oaks.
