Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a part of the tennis team? Buckle up for a deep dive into a day in the life of the Harrison High School tennis team.
JV coach Catherine Sherman has been coaching JV tennis for our school for one year and says that it has been great so far. When asked about her team’s routine, said, “At practice, we start with a short jog around the courts followed by stretching. Then we move into point play. This is where the players are separated onto courts and hit back and forth with each other. After this, we will typically do hitting drills and play matches. We typically end practice with a fun game.”
In every sport, there is always competition, some players may even get more playing time then others, Sherman elaborates by saying, “Coach Dave (the varsity coach) and I try to make sure everyone gets playing time. Some players might get more court time than others. Though, when possible, we will have players play exhibition matches so they get a chance to play.”
Players, coaches, parents, and audiences know that playing a sport can be tough and that everyone struggles occasionally. Sherman is very good with knowing what to do in these situations. Sherman says, “When my team is struggling, I try to stay positive. I like to remind the girls to have fun and believe in themselves.”
A good player can be described as many things, such as having a good attitude, being a good listener, and being nice towards others around you. Sherman talks about how these things come to play within tennis: “A good tennis player doesn’t give up, even when they are down. Tennis takes a lot of practice; you do not just get good overnight. We want players who want to be there and want to try their best every day.”
Sherman would like to say to others, “If you are looking to join the tennis team, I say come join! We are looking for players who are excited to play a sport and are willing to give it their all while also having fun.”
