Harrison High School has a home ec program, and here’s why you should consider joining.
Chef Walsh is William Henry Harrison high school’s resident home economics teacher. Home economics is the teaching of useful skills like cooking that don’t necessarily relate to the core classes and mandated state courses and standards. It teaches students useful skills in life. This program is centered around cooking and making food for yourself.
The three courses offered here are Creative Cuisine 1, Creative Cuisine 2 and Bread and Pastry. In these classes, you will learn how to cook and apply what you have learned to real world situations. Not to mention, you get to eat what you cook!
Joining a cooking class can be an awesome experience. You can learn basic cooking skills, as well as special skills like decorating, baking, and nutrition. The benefits, aside from learning to feed yourself, include learning your way around the kitchen. You will learn what different utensils are, what they are used for, and where they belong when you are finished.
It is also a great way to learn about other cultures, including what people from other cultures eat, why they eat it, and how the food is prepared?
Being a good cook can improve your self-esteem. Of course, being self-sufficient starts with feeding yourself; cooking for others is a great way to show that you care for others. There is something very rewarding about saying, “I cooked this!” And who knows? It could be the beginning of a very lucrative career. Top chefs are in demand, lead a very exciting life, and make a good living.
Finally, Chef Walsh’s class is fun! She is a great teacher and will teach you everything you need to know about cooking and baking, and so much more!
