Harrison High School finished up the 5-26 Special Olympic season on Tuesday May 6th with a day of fun, friends, and skills. The last event was a day celebrating baseball. The event was originally planned to happen outside, but with the weather calling for heavy rain they moved the event indoors. The event was held in the middle school gym.
Ben Toerner, the high school head varsity baseball coach, was excited to help organize this event. It helps his players share something they love, and it helps the school by building skills in our Special Olympians. Harrison has held this event now for four years.
This year, this event was set up with five stations. There were stations for throwing baseballs with a partner, one for pitching the ball to a Harrison baseball player catcher, one for hitting the ball on a tee, one for hitting off a pitcher, and a station for base running. As the students rotated the stations, varsity players showed participants how to play baseball and how to work as a team. I asked David Baldock, Varsity player and volunteer, what his favorite part about playing baseball is. He said he loves being with his friends and playing as a team.
This year one other school was able to join in. Princeton brought a group of participants with them. After lunch we as a group broke up into teams so we can play a game against one another to show off the awesome new skills we learned. This is always a really fun time with lots of laughing. This is always my favorite part because we get meet and talk to other team mates and work as a team.
