Saved by the Bell was a very popular TV show from 1989 to 1993. It first aired as a show called Good Morning, Miss Bliss, which is now considered the junior high years of the show, and based on its popularity, they changed the show’s name to Saved by the Bell and moved the school from Indiana to California. It continued airing as we watched the main cast go through high school and into college.
The reason why Saved by the Bell was so popular was because it changed the whole look of Saturday morning TV. Most of the shows had been cartoons, and now there was a live-action, fast-paced teen sitcom. Lots of people liked the difference, especially because this show talked relatable high school drama. It was about teen relationships, school pranks, but it didn’t stop there. It also tackled serious issues like drug issues use and homelessness.
It featured Mark Paul Gosselaar as Zack Morris, Tiffany Thiessen as Kelly Kapowski, Mario Lopez as A.C. Slater, Elizabeth Berkeley as Jessie Spawn, Dustin Diamond as screech, and Lark Voorhis as Lisa Turtle and Dennis Haskins as Richard Belding, the school principal who had to keep everyone in line. It aired on Saturday morning on NBC.
When I asked my mom, Mrs. Sweat about the show, she said her favorite character was Screech, and that most people would agree with her. The reason why is because he is funny. Also her favorite episode is when they had one on drinking and driving. She also said it was a show on life lessons. While Screech was her favorite, when asked who she would compare herself to, she said that the more studious, high-strung, responsible Jessie would be her choice because they are a lot alike.
After a long run and lots of fun and heartbreaks, the network cancelled this show in 1993 due to the cast getting too old for high school roles. However, you can still watch the whole series on Netflix. If you want to dive back into the 80’s and 90’s (and see an absolutely gigantic first generation cell phone that is bigger than a Stanley), check out this show!
