Roblox is a platform that contains many different games that range from obstacle courses (obbies) to roleplay to action. You can even customize a character that best represents you with “Robux” (Roblox currency), and this will be your character in any game you play! This platform was released just under two decades ago, when the internet was still new to the world.
Many students at Harrison High School play games on Roblox, and their favorite game with 32.3% people agreeing, is Brookhaven. Brookhaven is a roleplay game where people can customize their avatar, own a house, drive neat vehicles, and play family! Some of these students also have younger siblings that play Roblox games. The most popular kinds of games among them are simulator games such as “Pet Simulator 99” and “Bee Swarm Simulator”.
In December of 2025, Roblox updated to have their chat feature restricted for certain age groups. This made it so certain age groups could chat with each other. The age groups that can chat with each other are under 9 years, 9-12 years, 13-15 years, 16-17 years, 18-20 years, and 21+ years. According to the Roblox website, “Players age 12 and younger have their posts and chats filtered both for inappropriate content and to prevent personal information from being posted.”
This restriction may have taken place because of safety towards young children who play games on Roblox. According to this article, a very unfortunate but true reality is that “Some parents have reported that their children were contacted by adults through Roblox who have done one of the following: Sent inappropriate messages, asked the child to move the conversation to Discord, Snapchat, or another platform, requested photos or videos, or attempted to build a private relationship with the child.” The new chat restriction may seem like an inconvenience to some, but this is really to keep young children safe.
High school students were asked how they would feel if they found out that their younger sibling was chatting with an older individual, and they had similar answers. The most common answer among the students is that they would feel bad, but some students had become defensive! According to one student, “I would be upset, Roblox should’ve taken action quicker and better. If my sister was talking to a strange man and got hurt, all hell would break loose.” It is safe to say that these students agree with the new chat policy, even though people work their way around it. Proof that it doesn’t take much effort to lie about age is shown when over 58% of students have lied about their age to reach a restricted area online, according to a Paw Print poll. I guess all we can hope for is that people stop lying about their age for the sake of their safety and adults leave children alone on Roblox.
