Dominic Fike just released his newest mixtape called Rocket on Friday, August 22nd, and in my opinion, it’s the best music project that was released in August. Rocket is Dominic Fike’s first mixtape with 12 songs on it. He teased the mixtape around August 14th stating, “Rocket is not an album” and officially announced it on August 15th and released three songs that are on the mixtape: “All Hands on Deck”, “Aftermath”, and “Smile”. ‘Rocket’ is very closely related and dedicated to his son, Rocket, which the mixtape is named after, and also confirms any speculations that Dominic had become a father this past year.
Dominic Fike is a singer/songwriter who is known for his songs “Mama’s Boy”, “Misses”, “3 Nights”, “Phone Numbers”, and “Babydoll”. He has two albums What Could Possibly Go Wrong (2020), and Sunburn (2023), two EP releases Don’t Forget About Me, Demos (2018), 14 Minutes (2024), and his most recent release, his LP Rocket (2025). He creates alternative/indie music which in my opinion is more in your feels type of music. His music abilities and genre relate to Kevin Abstract, who he made a few songs with for Kevin’s new album “BLUSH” which was released in June of this year. Omar Apollo is also a related artist, and he also made a song with Dominic Fike called “Hit Me Up” in 2019. Kenny Beats is another related artist who collaborated with Dominic Fike on the songs “Hit Me Up” and “Phone Numbers” both released in 2019. Bakar is another connected artist who made a song with Dominic Fike called “Stop Selling Her Drugs” which was also released in 2019. Still Woozy is another closely related artist with a similar sound and style of music. Dijon is also another related artist to Dominic Fike. Steve Lacey, Malcolm Todd, Wallows, Rex Orange County, Twenty-One Pilots, and Yeek are all artists related to Dominic Fike as well.
My top three songs in Dominic Fike’s new LP have to be “All Hands on Deck”, “Epilogue”, and “David Lyons”. I feel like all these songs are somehow related to each other and it really connects me to them for some reason. In my opinion they all have the same vibe, unlike his album “Sunburn” where he had songs that all had a different type of feel, which isn’t a bad thing. It’s always good when it’s Dominic Fike we’re talking about. “All Hands on Deck” is my number one and it’s for a good reason; it really focuses on real life problems people face. My favorite lyric in the song is “We all doin’ that hawk tuah get famous, hop to it, get sober” because it really emphasizes how easy it is to get famous and gain popularity while also dragging you into things you’d never expect, like having to get sober or maybe having to clean up yourself because you gained popularity and you have a different status then you did before.
“Epilogue” is my second favorite in the album because it really focuses on the whole idea of moving on from something even if it’s as simple as dropping your ice cream on the sidewalk (which is pretty sad). It also shows moving on from something if it’s as hard as ending or losing a relationship with a family member you were really close to, and I’d have to say the chorus is my favorite part of the song. “David Lyons” is my third favorite song in the mixtape because it’s a really good song and I think it’s underrated. My favorite lyric in the song is “I’m a human being not a grill appliance” because I feel like he’s trying to explain that the internet really interprets things especially when you’re more well known in the world. It could also mean that he’s trying to explain the way he might get treated by other people, maybe including some of his “fans”.
This mixtape has become one of my favorite albums, it’s something I could put on and just relax to. In a video Buddykeg Breakdowns posted, he reviews the album by ranking the songs. He said, “For number ten I went with ‘Smile’ which is a very catchy, emotional banger.” I think this quote is good because it shows how he feels towards the song he chose for his ranking, and what he said shows his opinion and what the song means to him. In a video turning the tables posted, they said, “Painting pictures so fast.” He was referring to the first song that they listened to and were talking about. This is very significant because it shows how they feel about the opening act of the album review basically. It shows how they interpret the song as a whole and what it meant to them as an opening song to something that was brilliantly written.
As we can see, Dominic Fike’s new mixtape was a hit, and it has its mark in the history of “awesome-albums-that-have-dropped-but-aren’t-that-popular” list. In my opinion it’s awesome, in other people’s opinions it’s awesome, so I think your opinion (if you’ve read this article) is that it’s awesome. Give it a listen!
