There’s nothing like that feeling when you wake up on Christmas morning, put on your slippers, and run down the stairs as fast as you can to see a mountain of presents waiting for you. Of course, there’s always that person in your family that makes you wait to open then for some reason, either a last-minute gift wrapping or pictures. But then and only then do you get to finally open all your gifts. All those things still happen with or without snow, so why is it so important to have snow on Christmas? We’re about to find out.
Can you remember the last time there was snow on the ground on Christmas day? Chances are you can, but it has been a while. The last white Christmas in Cincinnati Ohio was in 2022. I asked freshman Kylee Reidman her last memory of a white Christmas and she said “I don’t really remember but those are by favorite Christmases.”
So, why is it even important to have a snowy Christmas in the first place? There are no scientific reasons for why snow makes Christmas feel more special, but we all know that it just does. In every Christmas movie or book, you see there’s snow. Every time you envision Christmas, there’s snow. An article on the website TIME gives more insight on this, citing the beauty of falling snow and the nostalgia of things being how they’re supposed to be, according to pop culture. As a kid myself there is no better feeling than waking up on what you think is a school day and your parents telling you it’s a snow day. Snow just makes life feel more magical. Sophomore Lilly McElfresh stated, “Christmas just feels more Christmasy when there’s snow on the ground, I love being able to sled on Christmas day.”
The next time there is predicted snow on Christmas is in the year 2027, but the article “Will we see snow on Christmas?” says that there is a 45-50% chance for snow this Christmas. This news gives at least some hope for a white Christmas this year.
Merry Christmas to you all, I hope to wake up on Christmas morning this year and see fluffy white snow as far as the eye can see. Make sure to flush those ice cubes down the toilet and wear those pajamas backwards!
